Plank Town Presents: Springfilm Made in Oregon "The General"
Please join us at the Wildish Theater for a free screening of The General. Arrive at the theater a few minutes early to look at Cottage Grove Historical Society books and DVDs related to the creation of The General that will be available for purchase. Special guest Lloyd Williams, vice president of the Cottage Grove Historical Society, will introduce the film and lead a short after-film discussion.
The General, considered by critics to be one of the greatest films ever made, is a silent comedy film released in 1926 that tells the story of Union spies stealing an engineer's beloved locomotive and his single-handed pursuit straight through enemy lines to get it back. Reviewer Gary Giddins calls The General "a peephole into history and by any definition an uncannily beautiful film” that “functions as a loving record of American town life, with its shops and picket fences and leisure pursuits, set against a splendor of mountains, gulches, rivers, and fields.” Using Cottage Grove, as his main location, Keaton preserved two eras: the Civil War, re-created with daunting attention to detail, and 1926, as passers-by in Cottage Grove would have seen it—the costumes were of the 19th century, but the buildings and natural surroundings were little changed. Starring Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, and Glen Cavender; directed by Clyde Bruckman and Buster Keaton; 67 minutes; 1926.
Through August 2017, Springfilm features a monthly free screening of a film that was made in Oregon.
The ongoing film series is presented by Plank Town Restaurant and Brewery and coordinated by a partnership with the Springfield Library and Willamalane Park & Recreation District. Springfilm: Made in Oregon will continue with Personal Best at 6:30 p.m., February 9.
